CCTV
Closed-circuit television (CCTV) is the use of video cameras to transmit a signal to a specific set of monitors. It differs from broadcast television in that the signal is not openly transmitted, though it may employ point to point wireless links.
CCTV
is often used for surveillance in areas that may need monitoring such
as banks, casinos, airports, military installations and convenience
stores. People can also buy consumer CCTV Systems for personal, private
or commercial use. A more advanced form of CCTV, utilising Digital Video
Recorders (DVR), provides recording for possibly many years, with a
variety of quality and performance options and extra features.
DVR
The digital video recorder is the modern replacement to time
lapse VCRs used during
the 80s and early 90s. Using a hard disk, the DVR stores
recordings from the
connected cameras. Recording quality can be adjusted depending on the
requirements of each situation. Each camera can have different recording
setup from
on incident only to recording 24 hours a day. The DVR also
acts as a multiplexer,
allowing the user to view multiple cameras at the same time.
Cameras
CCTV cameras are available in many different types. The camera creates
digital
images and passes these onto the DVR for viewing and recording. There
are 1000s
of CCTV cameras available ranging from internal black and white through
to very hiresolution
external weatherproof colour cameras is for detailed verification purposes.
Sensor in / Alarms
The DVR can connect to external devices that will tell the DVR that
something has
happened and that it should start recording on a certain camera. This
could be a
movement detector or similar. The DVR can also alarm out
when it detects
movement. For example the DVR could advise the telephone system that
movement
had been detected on a certain camera and the telephone system would
ring a predetermined
extension.
VGA Monitor
Typically these are LCD screens that can be desk or wall mounted. The
monitor
allows the CCTV owner to view either a certain camera or range of cameras.
Alternately, the user can setup the DVR to switch between cameras automatically.
Remote Viewer
The remote viewer allows the CCTV owner to view images from the on-site
system
from any internet connected PC at any location. This PC may be on the
same site and
can be at any location with a broadband internet connection.
